Part D Late Enrollment Penalty Calculator
Enter when their Initial Enrollment Period ended, any creditable drug coverage since, and when Part D starts. We apply the 63-day rule, take out Extra Help months, price the penalty on the base premium ($38.99 for 2026 and $41.33 for 2027), and say whether it’s worth appealing.
What it answers
- Each gap without Part D or creditable drug coverage since the Initial Enrollment Period, and whether it reaches 63 days
- The penalty for each year CMS has published a base premium ($38.99 for 2026 and $41.33 for 2027)
- Extra Help: no penalty while they have it, and its months never count
- Whether a reconsideration is worth filing, and the 60-day deadline from the date on the plan’s letter
For example: 18 uncovered months → $7.00 a month in 2026, $7.40 in 2027.
How it's worked out
1% of the national base beneficiary premium for each full month without coverage, in any continuous gap of 63 days or more. Rounded to the nearest 10 cents.
The base premium changes every year, so the penalty is recomputed every January. It lasts as long as they have Part D, even after switching plans.
Someone under 65 on disability stops paying it at 65.
